Celebrating Life with Art
My art is an expression of the heartfelt gratitude I feel as I celebrate life as a survivor and thriver.
I learned to express my life journey through watercolor, collage, and mixed media and create work that is a window into my world. The day that my best friend introduced me to the magic of watercolor, my worldview changed dramatically. I am often asked why I chose watercolor as my favorite medium. The answer is simple; watercolor chose me. I have always enjoyed taking risks in life, and the paint certainly takes me to places I could only go to if I just allow it to flow. The magic of the water as it merges with the paint, dancing on the page...it is excitingly unpredictable. I love creating drama with my colors, using wide brushes and strokes as I recall my favorite works of Georgia O’Keefe. My Judaic themes are often fanciful and powerful; they portray the stories, symbols, and prayers of my heritage and allow me to paint my spiritual energy onto the page. In researching my topics, I always find that I have gone on an additional journey of discovery and knowledge that expands me as a Jewish woman as well as an artist.
I have been blessed with very talented teachers who taught me much more than technique; they taught me to silence the inner critic and dare to be bold and innovative in my work. The process of painting is a prayer, a meditation, a healing, a journey.
I was privileged to develop the Creative Arts for Healing Workshop through The Diane Barton Complementary Program at Cooper Cancer Institute; through this experience I was able to share my enthusiasm for and belief in the power of creative process. The success of these workshops led to an opportunity to offer the program to children in the hospital. My greatest satisfaction comes when I see their faces light up when I ask Are you ready to paint?” For that hour they were transported from the hospital environment into the magical world of creativity and a celebration of life.
I am currently able to work in my two studio locations- Maryland and Florida where I am inspired by the people and beauty that surround me.
